Sylvia Pinel: A French Political Trailblazer

Early Life and Education

Sylvia Pinel was born on September 28, 1977. She earned a postgraduate degree (DESS) in litigation and arbitration and a DEA in fundamental private and European law.

Entry into Politics

In 2002, Pinel was hired by Jean-Michel Baylet, then President of the Radical Left Party (PRG), as an advisor in the General Council of Tarn-et-Garonne. Two years later, she became Baylet's chief of staff.

Parliamentary Career

Pinel served as a member of the National Assembly for the 2nd constituency of Tarn-et-Garonne from 2007 to 2012 and 2016 to present. In 2010, she was elected to the Regional Council of Midi-Pyrénées and became head of the PRG branch in Tarn-et-Garonne.

Ministerial Roles

In May 2012, Pinel was appointed Minister Delegate for Crafts, Trade, and Tourism. She subsequently held the positions of Minister of Housing, Territorial Equality, and Rural Affairs from 2014 to 2016.

Leadership of the Radical Left Party

In February 2016, Pinel became interim leader of the PRG after Baylet's resignation. At the party's congress in September, she was elected as permanent president. In November, she was chosen as the PRG's candidate for the 2017 presidential election.

Presidential Bid and Merger Attempt

In December 2016, Pinel joined other left-wing candidates in an attempt to unite behind a single candidate in the presidential primaries. She received 1.97% of the vote in the first round of the primaries. In December 2017, she stepped down as PRG president in favor of a merger with the Radical Party to form the Radical, Social, and Liberal Movement. However, the merger failed in 2019, and Pinel revived the PRG.
