Tadeusz Buk
Early Life and EducationTadeusz Buk was born in Kielce, Poland. He completed his secondary education at the VIth General High School named after Juliusz Słowacki in Kielce. In 1984, he graduated from the Higher Officers' School of Armored Troops in Poznań.
Military Career
Buk began his military service in 1984 as a tank platoon commander in the 29th Medium Tank Regiment in Żagań. He served there until 1991.
From 1991 to 1993, he attended the Land Forces Faculty of the National Defense Academy in Warsaw. Subsequently, he served in the 18th Airborne Assault Battalion and the 6th Airborne Assault Brigade from 1993 to 1995.
Between 1995 and 1998, Buk was stationed with the 25th Air Cavalry Brigade in Tomaszów Mazowiecki. In 1999, after completing a year-long Command and Staff Course in the United States, he was appointed Deputy Commander of the brigade.
From 2002 to 2005, he served as the Commander of the 34th Armored Cavalry Brigade in Żagań. In 2004-2005, he was deployed to Iraq as the Deputy Commander of the Multinational Division Central-South.
Senior Leadership Roles
In 2005, Buk became Deputy Director of the Joint Forces Training Centre in Bydgoszcz. From 2006 to 2007, he served as Deputy Commander of the Combined Security Transition Command – Afghanistan CSTC-A.
On June 15, 2007, Buk became the Commander of the 1st Warsaw Mechanized Division named after Tadeusz Kościuszko. On July 25, he assumed command of the IXth rotation of the Polish military contingent and the Multinational Division Center-South in Iraq.
On September 15, 2009, President Lech Kaczyński appointed Buk as Commander of the Polish Land Forces, replacing General Waldemar Skrzypczak.
Death and Legacy
Buk tragically died in the Smolensk presidential plane crash on April 10, 2010. Posthumously, he was promoted to the rank of General of the Army on April 16, 2010.
Buk was highly decorated for his service. He was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Commander's Cross of the Military Cross Order, the Silver Cross of Merit, and the Bronze Cross of Merit, among others.
