Early Life and Resistance

Andrzej Wajda was born in Nowa Wilejka, near Vilnius, and attended secondary school in Vilnius from 1938. However, he obtained his high school diploma in 1944 through underground education during the German occupation. During World War II, Wajda was a member of the Polish resistance forces.

Post-War Education and Journalism

After the war, Wajda moved to Gliwice and began studying Polish philology at Jagiellonian University in Kraków. In 1946, he began working as a proofreader and technical editor for the magazine "Odrodzenie," where he also wrote numerous articles. In 1947, he moved to Warsaw with the magazine.

Socialist Realism and Political Involvement

In the early 1950s, Wajda began writing novels in accordance with the principles of socialist realism. He joined the Polish United Workers' Party in 1952. Wajda embraced the Khrushchev thaw and the newfound creative freedom it brought. Through close ties with the film industry, he began writing and directing screenplays.

Filmmaking and Censorship

With limited resources, Wajda directed his first film, "The Last Day of Summer," featuring only two actors. However, he became disillusioned by the dashed hopes for artistic freedom. He was expelled from the Polish United Workers' Party for protesting the expulsion of Professor Leszek Kołakowski. From 1976 onward, Wajda's works were published underground or abroad.
