Tamás Fellegi: A Multifaceted Hungarian Figure
Early Life and EducationTamás Fellegi, a Hungarian lawyer, political scientist, and businessman, was born in Budapest in 1956. He graduated from Ágost Trefor Gymnasium in 1974 and subsequently enrolled in Loránd Eötvös University in Budapest, where he majored in law and political science, graduating in 1981.
Academic Career
After obtaining his law degree, Fellegi worked as a researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences and as a junior lecturer at the Faculty of Law at Loránd Eötvös University. He co-founded and taught at the College of Social Sciences (now named after István Bibó) from 1983 to 1987. During this time, he also served as a founding member of Fidesz (Alliance of Young Democrats).
Studies in the United States
In 1985, Fellegi received a scholarship to Harvard University. He later attended the Graduate School at the University of Connecticut, where he earned a PhD in political science in 1987. He also worked as a researcher at the University of Rochester for a year.
Return to Hungary and Political Involvement
Fellegi returned to Hungary in 1993 and worked as an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at Loránd Eötvös University until 1997. He was also an adjunct instructor at the Századvég Political School.
Business Career
In 1995, Fellegi served as the executive director of Euroatlantic Ltd., a communications and political consulting firm. From 1996 to 2000, he held various positions at MATAV Zrt., including Industry Director and Deputy General Director. He became the CEO of EuroAtlantic in 2000.
Minister of National Development
Fellegi was appointed Minister of Development in Viktor Orbán's second government on May 3, 2010. In this role, he is responsible for state asset management, information communication, and domestic and EU-funded projects. He is also the government commissioner responsible for Hungarian-Russian economic cooperation and co-chairman of the Hungarian-Russian intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation.
Personal Life
Fellegi is married to Ágnes Szokolay, a psychologist. They have two sons.
