Early Career and Breakthrough

Tamirat Tola is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who burst onto the international scene in 2013. He excels in both cross-country and road running, with notable victories in the Ceske Budejovice Half Marathon, the Alcobendas and Seville Cross Country races, and the Addis Ababa and Bolzano 10K runs.

International Success

In 2014, Tola made his marathon debut at the Dubai Marathon, where he placed fourth with a time of 2:06.17. His international debut came at the 2015 World Cross Country Championships, where he finished sixth in the 12-kilometer race and helped Ethiopia win the team gold.

Olympic Glory

Tola's breakthrough came at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He represented Ethiopia in the 10,000 meters and secured a bronze medal, finishing just behind Mo Farah and Paul Tanui. His performance was particularly impressive as he edged out his compatriot Yiğrem Demelash by a mere hundredth of a second.

Marathon Dominance

Tola continued his ascent in 2017 by winning the prestigious Dubai Marathon with a personal best time of 2:04.11, the 17th-fastest marathon time in history. He also claimed the 2022 World Marathon Championship title and became the Olympic Marathon champion in 2024.
