Early Life and Education

Uzbek mathematician and historian Toktamys Adylovich Sarymsakov was born in Fergana, Uzbekistan, in 1899.

He graduated from a Russ-native school in 1916 and taught as a teacher.

Sarymsakov founded the first elementary school in Uzbekistan and participated in the establishment of the first Uzbek pedagogical college in Kokand (where he served as director from 1920 to 1925).

In 1929, he completed his studies in the physics and mathematics department of the Central Asian State University in Tashkent.

Academic and Scientific Career

During his university years, Sarymsakov began teaching and became a professor in 1931.

From 1931 to 1933, he served as the university's rector.

In 1937-1940, he chaired the Scientific Committee of the Council of People's Commissars of the Uzbek SSR and was also Deputy Chairman for Science, Culture, and Art from 1939 to 1943.

In 1941, he led a scientific expedition to investigate the tomb of Emir Timur in Samarkand.

From 1940, he headed the Presidium of the Uzbek branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences and became the first president of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR in 1943.

From 1948, he taught at the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization and remained a member of the Presidium of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences.

Written Works

Sarymsakov authored several books, including:

"Basic Course in Mathematical Analysis" (1937) and "Fundamentals of Analytical Geometry" (1937) - university mathematics textbooks in Uzbek.

"Astronomical School of Ulugbek" (1950) - a monograph on Ulugbek's astronomy school.

"Essays on the History of Soviet Uzbekistan Culture" (1955).

"Reflections on the Path Travelled" (1970) - memoirs.
Awards and Recognition

Sarymsakov received the Stalin Prize in 1952 for his work on Ulugbek's astronomical school.

He was a member of the Communist Party (Bolsheviks) since 1931.

Later Years
Sarymsakov passed away in 1974.

He remains an important figure in Uzbek mathematics and science historiography.
