In 2007, Schilling landed a supporting role in the independent film 'Dark Matter,' but it wasn't until 2009 that she received her breakthrough opportunity. She was cast as Veronica Callahan, a war veteran with a tough demeanor, in the medical series 'Mercy.' In 2011, Schilling played Dagny Taggart in the film adaptation of Ayn Rand's 'Atlas Shrugged.' She then starred alongside Zac Efron in the movie adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' novel 'The Lucky One.' Schilling also had a small role in Ben Affleck's film 'Argo' the following year.

In 2012, Schilling received her most notable role to date as Piper Chapman in the Netflix series 'Orange Is the New Black.' The show, based on Piper Kerman's memoir about her experiences in prison, garnered critical acclaim and catapulted Schilling to widespread recognition.
