Temur Jorjoliani's Political Career
Temur Jorjoliani, a Georgian politician, was born on January 28, 1966. He was a prominent member of the Monarchist-Conservative Party of Georgia and joined the political alliance "Motherland" in 2001.
Early Political Involvement
During the communist era, Jorjoliani was an active member of the youth organization Komsomol. In 1989, he established the Monarchist-Conservative Party of Georgia. In 1990, the party joined the anticommunist coalition "Round Table," led by Zviad Gamsakhurdia. However, it withdrew from the alliance shortly afterward.
Member of Parliament
Elected as a member of the Georgian Parliament in 1992 on the Monarchist-Conservative Party list, Jorjoliani led the parliamentary faction "Conservative" from 1992 to 1995. In 1994, he staged a 33-day hunger strike to demand the resignation of President Eduard Shevardnadze.
Arrest and Emigration
Jorjoliani was arrested in 1995 for illegal possession of weapons and narcotics, leading to a four-year prison sentence. However, he was released early in 1997 and subsequently emigrated to the Netherlands. Allegations suggest that the criminal charges against Jorjoliani were politically motivated.
Return to Politics
In 2000, Jorjoliani returned to Georgia and joined the political alliance "Motherland" in 2001, led by former state security minister Igor Giorgadze. Jorjoliani unsuccessfully contested parliamentary elections in 2003 and 2004.
2006 Arrest
On September 6, 2006, Jorjoliani was arrested by Georgian police on charges of plotting a coup d'état. Others arrested included representatives of opposition organizations, such as Maia Nikoladze from the "Anti-Soros" foundation. The Tbilisi City Court authorized Jorjoliani's detention for three months.
