Early Life and Career
Terry Moore, born Helen Luella Kofford on January 7, 1929, in Glendale, California, was raised in a Mormon family with no aspirations for movie stardom. However, her life took a dramatic turn when a neighbor submitted her photo to a casting magazine, leading to an audition that earned her a role in a 1940 film at the age of eleven. Her love for horses and ability to ride them standing bareback secured her the part.
Initially credited as Judy Ford or June Ford, she adopted the stage name "Terry Moore" in 1948. Despite being primarily known for B-movies, she appeared in critically acclaimed films such as George Cukor's "Gaslight" (1944), where she portrayed Ingrid Bergman's character as a young girl, and "Mighty Joe Young" (1949), where she starred as a woman who travels to Hollywood with her pet gorilla.
Recognition and Personal Life
Moore received an Academy Award nomination for her role in "Come Back, Little Sheba" (1952). Aside from her success on screen, she also became acquainted with Marilyn Monroe, whom she described as "the sweetest, loneliest girl I ever met."
Moore's personal life was just as eventful. She married football player Glenn Davis in 1951, followed by Eugene McGrath in 1956, and Stuart Cramer, with whom she had two children, from 1957 to 1972. In 1979, she married Richard F. Carey and later Jerry Rivers in 1992, who remained her husband until his death in 2001.
Rumored Marriage to Howard Hughes
After the death of aviation pioneer and filmmaker Howard Hughes, Moore claimed they had entered into a secret marriage in 1949, aboard a ship whose logbook documenting the ceremony was subsequently destroyed. They allegedly separated in 1956, but Moore asserted that their marriage was never legally dissolved. Hughes's heirs acknowledged their long-term relationship and awarded her an undisclosed settlement, speculated by Moore to be "no more than eight figures."
Recent Career and "The Silent Life"
Moore continues to act, most recently appearing in the 2024 film "The Silent Life," directed by Vladislav Kozlov. In the film, she portrays the enigmatic Woman in Black, a character paralleled to Moore herself, who long guarded her secret of being married to Howard Hughes.
At 95 years old, Terry Moore remains an icon of the Golden Age of Hollywood, a testament to her talent, determination, and the enduring power of her story.
