Teuvo Kohonen, a distinguished Finnish scientist, was born on July 8, 1934, in Turku, Finland. He earned a Master's degree in Engineering from the Helsinki University of Technology in 1957, followed by a Licentiate in Technology in 1960 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1962.
Academic Career
From 1957 to 1959, Kohonen served as Assistant Lecturer in Physics at the Helsinki University of Technology. He was promoted to Associate Professor from 1963 to 1965 and Professor of Physics from 1965 to 1993.
Contributions to Computer Science
Kohonen made significant contributions to computer science, particularly in the fields of artificial neural networks and machine learning. In 1960, while working at the Physics Department of the Helsinki University of Technology, he participated in the creation of Finland's first computer, Reflac (Reflex Aritmetics Computer).
Research on Artificial Neural Networks
Kohonen's research focused on the development of artificial neural networks. He made groundbreaking contributions to associative memory theory, vector quantization learning algorithms, and symbolic information processing algorithms.
Self-Organizing Maps
Kohonen's most notable creation is the self-organizing map, a special type of neural network used for data clustering. The algorithm and maps developed by Kohonen have become the foundation for numerous research endeavors in the field of neural networks.
Leadership and Recognition
Kohonen served as the first Vice President of the International Association for Pattern Recognition from 1982 to 1984. In 1991, he became the first President of the European Neural Network Society. He was elected Honorary Academician of the Academy of Finland in March 2000.

Kohonen received numerous awards for his scientific achievements, including the IEEE Neural Networks Council Pioneer Award (1991), the Technical Achievement Award of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (1995), and the Frank Rosenblatt Technical Field Award (2008).
