Opposition to the Second Empire
Casimir-Périer's republican beliefs led him to oppose the Second Empire established by Napoleon III in 1851. After the coup d'état on December 2, 1851, he was imprisoned for his involvement in the resistance. He remained a vocal critic of the Empire throughout its existence.
Government Service in the Third Republic
After the fall of the Empire in 1870, Casimir-Périer played a key role in the establishment of the Third Republic. He served as General Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was elected to the National Assembly in 1871. He aligned himself with the Republican Union led by Léon Gambetta.
Political Career under Freysinette and Gambetta
In 1875, Casimir-Périer was appointed as a lifelong senator. He held ministerial positions in the governments of Charles de Freycinet and Jules Ferry, serving as Minister of Justice.
Resignation and Later Career
In 1884, Casimir-Périer resigned as President of the Court of Cassation due to the bankruptcy of a railway company where he had been an administrator. He continued to play an active role in the Senate, serving as Quaestor from 1890 until his death in 1899.
