Early Life and Naval Career

Born in 1741, Capellen joined the Dutch navy at the tender age of ten. By 1783, his exceptional skills and leadership qualities had earned him the rank of captain.

Russian-English Expedition and Treason

In 1799, Capellen played a pivotal role in a joint Russian-English expedition against French forces in the Netherlands. Commanding a portion of the Dutch fleet, he audaciously switched allegiances to the English. This act of betrayal drew a death sentence from his former comrades.

Exile and Return

Capellen was forced to flee to England, where he resided until 1813. However, with the accession of William I as King of the Netherlands, Capellen was pardoned and appointed Vice-Admiral.
