Early Life and EducationTeresa Rebeck was born on February 19, 1958, in Kenwood, Ohio. She graduated from Ursuline Academy in Cincinnati in 1976 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1980. In 1983, she received a Master of Arts degree and a Master of Fine Arts in Playwriting in 1986, both from Brandeis University. Rebeck ultimately completed her education with a Doctorate in Victorian Melodrama from Brandeis University in 1989.
Theatrical Career
Rebeck's celebrated theatrical career began with her Broadway debut, "Mauritius," which premiered at the Biltmore Theatre in 2007. Numerous other plays followed, including "The Scene," "The Water's Edge," and "The Family of Mann" at Second Stage Theatre; "Bad Dates" and "The Butterfly Collection" at Playwrights Horizons; and "View of the Dome" at New York Theatre Workshop.
In 2003, her play "Omnium Gatherum," co-written with Alexandra Gersten-Vassilaros, was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for Drama. Her play "The Understudy" premiered at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2008 and ran in New York from 2009 to 2010. Rebeck also contributed to the script of the musical "Ever After," based on the film starring Drew Barrymore. Alan Rickman headlined her play "Seminar," which opened on Broadway in 2011.
Television and Film
Rebeck's extensive television writing credits include sitcoms like "Dream On" and "American Dreamer," dramas such as "Brooklyn Bridge" and "L.A. Law," and genre shows like "First Wave" and "Third Watch." She penned episodes for "Canterbury's Law," "Smith," "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," and "NYPD Blue."
In 2012, Rebeck created and executive produced the NBC musical series "Smash." She also wrote screenplays for films like "Harriet the Spy," "Gossip," and "Catwoman," as well as the independent film "Sunday on the Rocks."
Literary Contributions
Beyond her stage and screen work, Rebeck published a book of humorous essays on writing and show business, "Free Fire Zone." She has contributed to "American Theatre" magazine and published excerpts of her plays in the "Harvard Review." Her debut novel, "Three Girls and Their Brother," was released in 2008.
