Early Life and Musical Training

Thomas Baltzar was born around 1631 in Lübeck, Germany, into a musical family. His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all musicians. From an early age, Thomas received musical instruction from various teachers, including Johann Schop, Gregor Zuber, Franz Tunder, and Nicolaus Bleyer.

Journey to England

Through connections with the German embassy in Sweden, Baltzar served as a musician there until 1653. His encounter with English musicians accompanying British Lord Keeper Bulstrode Whitelocke sparked his decision to emigrate to England in 1655.

Musical Recognition

Baltzar gained recognition in England, performing at the premiere of the opera "The Siege of Rhodes." On March 4, 1656, he played before writer and diarist John Evelyn and other notable figures, captivating them with his extraordinary skill.

Royal Appointment and Later Career

In 1661, Baltzar joined King Charles II's private band with a substantial salary. He composed some of the earliest known works for three violins, demonstrating his virtuosity and technical prowess.

Decline and Death

Unfortunately, Baltzar's excessive drinking habits took a toll on his health. He passed away on July 24, 1663, and was buried in Westminster Abbey on July 27.
