Early Life and Education

Weiss embarked on his academic journey at Harvard University, where he earned his Bachelor's degree. Career at the United Nations and Beyond

Weiss's professional endeavors have been deeply intertwined with the United Nations. He served in the Office of the United Nations Commissioner for Namibia, the University Program of the World Order Institute, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, and the International Labor Organization. Notably, from 1975 to 1985, he held the position of Senior Economic Affairs Officer at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in Geneva.

After his time at UNCTAD, Weiss became the Executive Director of the International Peace Academy (now International Peace Institute) until 1989. He then moved to Brown University as an Adjunct Professor of International and Public Affairs, serving as Deputy Director of the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs.

Weiss assumed the role of Executive Director of the Academic Council on the UN System (ACUNS) from 1992 to 1998. During this tenure, he co-directed the influential project "Humanitarianism and War." From 2012 to 2015, he held a Visiting Professorship at SOAS, University of London.

Weiss's academic leadership has been instrumental in shaping international relations discourse. He served as the Director of the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies from 2001 to 2014.
