Biography of Tigran Sargsyan
Tigran Sargsyan is an Armenian statesman who served as the Prime Minister of Armenia. He was born on January 29, 1960, in Stepanavan, Armenia.
Education and Early Career
Sargsyan attended Yerevan Technical School No. 14 from 1977 to 1980, and then studied at the Yerevan Institute of National Economy, specializing in planning and economics. He graduated with distinction in 1980. Sargsyan furthered his education at the Leningrad Finance and Economics Institute named after N. A. Voznesensky from 1980 to 1983, where he earned a diploma with honors. He pursued his postgraduate studies at the same institute from 1983 to 1987, focusing on regional socio-economic development planning in Armenia. He successfully defended his dissertation and obtained a candidate of economic sciences degree.
Professional Career
Sargsyan began his professional career in 1987 as a senior research fellow and the head of the group for international economic relations at the Research Institute of Economics and Planning in Armenia. From 1988 to 1993, he served as the chairman of the Republican Council of Young Specialists and Scientists. He also coordinated seminars on economic reforms for bankers from 1990 to 1991.
In 1993, Sargsyan taught banking at Yerevan State University. From 1993 to 1995, he served as a deputy in the Supreme Council of Armenia as part of the "National Democrats" faction, where he chaired the standing committee on financial, credit, and budgetary issues. In 1994, he participated in legislative activities at the International Law Institute in Washington, D.C., USA.
Sargsyan further enhanced his expertise in banking and management by attending programs such as "Effective Bank Management" at the Economic Development Institute of the World Bank in Washington, D.C., from 1996 to 1997. He also served as the president of the Association of Banks of Armenia from 1995 to 1998.
Sargsyan was the director of the Institute for Transitional Society Studies from 1995 to 2008. On March 3, 1998, he became the chairman of the Central Bank of Armenia, a position he held until April 9, 2008. During his tenure, he played a significant role in stabilizing the country's financial system and implementing key monetary policies.
In recognition of his contributions, Sargsyan was awarded an honorary doctorate from Yerevan State Economic University on December 2, 2005. From 2005 to 2007, he served as the chairman of the Interstate Bank Council.
Prime Minister of Armenia
Sargsyan assumed the position of Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia on April 9, 2008. In this role, he focused on promoting economic growth, attracting foreign investment, and implementing structural reforms. Under his leadership, Armenia witnessed significant advancements in various sectors, including agriculture, information technology, and tourism.
Sargsyan holds the military rank of reserve officer and has authored over 20 scientific articles throughout his career.
