Early Life and Education
Tim Hodgkinson was born on May 1, 1949, in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. While studying social anthropology at Cambridge University, he met Fred Frith and together they formed the avant-garde rock band Henry Cow in 1968.
Henry Cow
Hodgkinson played a pivotal role in Henry Cow, writing notable compositions such as "Living in the Heart of the Beast" and "Erk Gah." The band provided a formative musical experience, allowing him to explore new sonic possibilities through collaboration.
The Work and Woof Records
After Henry Cow disbanded in 1978, Hodgkinson formed the post-punk band The Work with Bill Gilonis, Mick Hobbs, and Rick Wilson. In 1980, he co-founded the independent label Woof Records with Gilonis.
Siberian Expeditions and K-Space
In the 1990s, Hodgkinson embarked on a series of expeditions to Siberia with Scottish percussionist Ken Hyder. These journeys led to collaborations with local musicians, culminating in the formation of K-Space, a trio featuring Gendos Chamzyryn.
Improvisation and Collaborations
Hodgkinson is renowned as an improviser, having performed with countless musicians over the years. Notable collaborations include the Konk Pack, a free improvisation collective, and a reunion performance with former Henry Cow members Fred Frith and Chris Cutler in 2006.
Solo Career and Other Endeavors
In addition to his collaborative work, Hodgkinson has released several solo albums, including "Splutter" (1986) and "Klarnt" (2010). He has also written extensively on music, published a book on musical anthropology, and contributed to various journals.
Self-Taught Musician
Despite his sophisticated compositions, Hodgkinson remains self-taught, having never received formal musical training. He plays saxophone, clarinet, keyboards, guitar, ukulele, and sings. While he briefly attempted piano and clarinet lessons, he soon developed his own approach to reading and writing music, including studying at Morley College in London.
