Tim Rowlands: The Surrogate Mammal Keeper
In the wild, the orphaned dik-dik calf faced certain death. However, Tim Rowlands, the curator of mammals at Chester Zoo in the United Kingdom, stepped in to become the animal's surrogate mother.

A Motherless Infant
For unknown reasons, the calf's biological mother abandoned her, leaving Rowlands with the responsibility of providing the necessary care. Despite the absence of a maternal bond, the calf, affectionately named Aluna, instinctively clung to Rowlands for survival.
Feeding Regimen
As Aluna is still too young for the adult diet of buds, shoots, and fruits, she requires frequent feedings. Rowlands diligently administers milk feedings five times a day, alternating between his home and office, starting at 7 AM and ending around 10 PM.
Growth and Development
Despite her diminutive size, Aluna is making steady progress. With a height of only 20 centimeters, she will eventually reach a maximum height of 40 centimeters and a length of 70 centimeters. Dik-diks have a lifespan of approximately ten years.
Office Commute
Rowlands transports Aluna to his office each day, where she spends the day scampering around. While the calf is becoming increasingly active, Rowlands emphasizes the importance of her not outgrowing her current size until she is fully capable of defending herself in the wild.
Future Plans
Once Aluna has grown sufficiently and expanded her diet, she will be introduced to other dik-diks to assess her independence. Rowlands' dedication to Aluna's well-being ensures her survival and future reintegration into a social group.
