On November 26, 1939, Anna Mae Bullock was born in Nutbush, Tennessee, the second daughter of a Baptist deacon and a factory worker. At the age of 10, her parents divorced, and she and her sister moved in with their grandmother.

Anna Bullock began singing in her Baptist church at the age of five. At 16, she moved to St. Louis with her sister and mother. There, she met Ike Turner, a rhythm-and-blues musician. In 1958, she became the lead singer and vocalist for Ike Turner's revue.

Bullock's big break came when she recorded the hit song "A Fool in Love" in Ike's absence. Ike changed her name to Tina Turner and rebranded the group as "Ike & Tina Turner Revue." The couple married in 1962. Tina gave birth to four sons, including Ike's son Michael and their own son Ronald.
