TJ Lanning: American Alpine Skier
Early Promise and InjuriesBorn in Montana, TJ Lanning began skiing at the age of three. As a teenager, he was recognized as one of the top junior skiers in the US and was recruited by elite training programs. In 1999, he won the Super-G at the Western J3 JOs and earned a silver medal in slalom. In 2001, he was named the top-ranked skier in his age group for both giant slalom and super-G.
World Cup Debut and Injuries
Lanning made his World Cup debut in 2002 but failed to qualify for a second run. In 2007, he competed in the World Championships, placing 20th in the super combined, 34th in the super-G, and 41st in the downhill. Despite his early success, injuries hindered Lanning's potential.
Recovery and Return
A torn meniscus plagued Lanning early in the 2009 season, but he rallied to achieve impressive results. He recorded a career-best ninth place finish in downhill at Lake Louise and ranked among the top ten in multiple other races, including the downhill at Val Gardena, Italy. Unfortunately, a crash in Kitzbühel resulted in a torn ACL, ending his season prematurely. Despite the injury, Lanning finished in the top 25 in both downhill and super-G, despite missing the final three months of competition.
Undeterred, Lanning underwent rehabilitation at the Park City Center of Excellence, one of the top trauma rehabilitation clinics for injured athletes. He was cleared to compete by November and resumed racing in Lake Louise.
Personal Life
Beyond the slopes, Lanning enjoys golf, bird hunting, water skiing, and wakeboarding. He embodies the spirit of a Montana cowboy, combining outdoor recreation with his passion for alpine skiing.
