Early Life and Education
Born:1960Todd Daniel Walters was born in 1960 and raised in a military family. His father, Thomas Edward Walters, was a Brigadier General in the United States Air Force.
In 1982, Walters graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on June 2 of that year.
Military Career
Initial Training and Assignments:From 1982 to 1984, Walters underwent various training courses, including pilot training at Reese Air Force Base, Texas; fighter training at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico; and replacement training for the OV-10 at Patrick Air Force Base, Florida.
He served as an OV-10 pilot in the 704th Tactical Air Support Squadron in Sembach, West Germany, from 1983 to 1984.
Instructor and Fighter Pilot:
From 1984 to 1986, Walters served as an OV-10 instructor pilot and flight examiner in the 27th Tactical Air Support Squadron at George Air Force Base, California.
After completing additional fighter training, he became an F-15 instructor pilot and flight examiner in the 53rd Tactical Fighter Squadron in Bitburg, West Germany, from 1987 to 1989.
Weapons School and Staff Assignments:
Walters attended the United States Air Force Weapons School at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, in 1990, earning the Fighter Weapons Instructor Course qualification.
He held various staff positions, including Chief of Weapons and Tactics with the 9th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico (1990-1992), and Assistant Operations Officer, Air Liaison Officer, and Instructor Pilot in the F-15 Division of the USAF Weapons School at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada (1992-1995).
Higher Education and Command Experience:
In 1995, Walters earned a Master of Arts in Aeronautical Science Technology from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He later graduated from the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama (1995), and the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia (1996).
Over the next decade, Walters held progressively more senior command positions, including:

NATO and USEUCOM Command
On March 15, 2019, President Donald Trump appointed Walters as Commander of United States European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe. He assumed command on May 2, 2019, becoming the ninth USEUCOM commander and the 19th SACEUR.
During his tenure, Walters oversaw the NATO response to Russia's annexation of Crimea and the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine. He also strengthened partnerships with allies and enhanced NATO's collective defense capabilities.
Retirement and Legacy
General Walters retired from the Air Force in 2022 after a distinguished 40-year career. He is a highly decorated officer with numerous awards and honors, including the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star.
Walters' leadership and strategic vision left a lasting impact on the US Air Force, NATO, and the security of the Euro-Atlantic region.
