Early Life and Aspiring Actor

Born as Samuel Yewell Tompkins in Owensboro, Kentucky, Tom Ewell initially defied his parents' expectations by rejecting their suggestions to pursue law or tobacco farming. Driven by his passion for acting, he debuted on stage in 1928's "The Spider" at age 19.

Theatre and Broadway Success

Ewell relocated to New York City in 1931 and enrolled in an acting studio, studying alongside future icons Montgomery Clift and Karl Malden. His Broadway debut came in 1934's "The First Legion" and "Geraniums in My Window."

Cinematic Breakthrough and "The Seven Year Itch"

Ewell made his film debut in 1940 but gained wider recognition in the late 1940s. In 1949, he played a pivotal role in George Cukor's comedy-drama "Adam's Rib." His performance led to a string of acclaimed roles, including in Cukor's "A Life of Her Own" (1950), Fritz Lang's war drama "American Guerrilla in the Philippines" (1950), and Richard Haydn's "Mr. Music" (1950).

The pinnacle of Ewell's career arrived in 1952 with the Broadway premiere of "The Seven Year Itch." He portrayed Richard Sherman for over 900 performances, earning a Tony Award in 1953. He reprised the role in the 1955 film adaptation, opposite Marilyn Monroe, who became a global icon thanks to her infamous "white dress" scene.

Later Career and Television Triumph

As Ewell aged, he shifted towards television and theater. He made appearances in popular series such as "Baretta" and "Murder, She Wrote," marking his final acting role in 1986. Despite his extensive filmography, Ewell admitted that he never watched any of his own movies, citing his self-critical nature.

Personal Life and Legacy

Ewell was married twice, first to Judith Abbott (1946-1947) and then to Marjorie Sanborn (1948-1994). He had a son, Taylor. Ewell passed away at Motion Picture Country House and Hospital in 1994 at the age of 85. His legacy as a renowned actor and his enduring performance in "The Seven Year Itch" continue to captivate audiences to this day.
