Early Life and Family

Tom Watson was born in Sheffield, England, in 1967. His parents were active Labour Party members, while his grandmother, Elsie Watson, was a lifelong member of the Communist Party until its dissolution in 1991. Watson's father held various temporary jobs before working in Kidderminster's (West Midlands) social services beginning in 1970, where young Tom grew up.

Career Beginnings

In 1984, Watson secured his first job as a librarian for a local Labour Party branch in London. After graduating from the University of Hull in 1992, he joined the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU). From 1993 to 1997, Watson served as the Labour Party's National Development Officer for Youth.

Parliamentary Career

In 2001, Watson was elected to Parliament for the West Bromwich East constituency. He held his seat in subsequent elections, serving in various parliamentary roles, including Parliamentary Private Secretary to Chancellor of the Exchequer Dawn Primarolo (2003-2004), Assistant Government Whip (2004-2005), and Government Whip (2005-2006). In 2006, he briefly held the position of Parliamentary Undersecretary of State for Defence with responsibility for veterans.

Brown's Cabinet

On January 24, 2008, Prime Minister Gordon Brown appointed Watson as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Cabinet Office with responsibility for digital engagement. He became the first UK MP to have his own blog but jokingly referred to himself as an "apprentice nerd" at the time.

Labour Shadow Cabinets

After Gordon Brown dismissed Watson from his cabinet on June 5, 2009, Watson held various roles within the Labour Party. He served as Deputy Chair of the Labour Party and Shadow Campaign Coordinator (2011-2013). He resigned from both positions following a scandal involving candidate selection in Falkirk.

Deputy Leader of the Labour Party

On September 12, 2015, Watson was elected Deputy Leader of the Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn. He also became the Shadow Secretary of State for the Cabinet and the Labour Party Chair.

Resignation

On November 6, 2019, Watson announced his resignation as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and stated he would not seek re-election to the House of Commons at the next election, citing personal rather than political reasons.
