Political Career
Politician and former presidential candidate of Transnistria, a self-proclaimed breakaway region of Moldova. He served as Mayor of Bender, Transnistria's second-largest city, from 1995 to 2001 before his presidential campaign.
Opposition to Igor Smirnov
He claims that his opposition to Igor Smirnov led to anti-Semitic propaganda accusing him of being Jewish (which is not true) and forced him to resign as mayor. In the biographical text on his campaign posters, he described his occupation as "unemployed." He told the British Helsinki Human Rights Group that he feared for his personal safety after the election.
Support for Moldova and Vladimir Putin
He supports conditional reunification with Moldova and is a supporter of Vladimir Putin.
Presidential Candidacy
As a candidate in the December 9, 2001 Transnistrian presidential election, he placed second, failing to defeat incumbent Igor Smirnov but receiving more votes than his other opponent, human rights activist Alexandr Radchenko.
