Early Life and Education

Born in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, Carvajal studied at the University of Seville and later at the University of Madrid. After completing his education, he pursued a career in government service.

Political Career

During the Napoleonic invasion of Spain, Carvajal served as an intendant in the patriotic army from 1809 to 1811. Following the war, he returned to his academic pursuits but faced political persecution in 1815, leading to his imprisonment for five years.

After the revolution of 1820, Carvajal was released and appointed to the State Council. However, with the restoration of absolutism in 1823, he was exiled and only allowed to return four years later.

Literary Endeavors

Despite his political career, Carvajal was renowned as a poet and translator. He mastered the Hebrew language at the age of 45 to translate several books of the Bible into Spanish.

Legacy
