Vermaelen's footballing journey began in his native Belgium with K.F.C. Germinal Beerschot, which later merged to become Germinal Beerschot. In 2004, he made a significant move to the Netherlands, joining Ajax.
Professional Debut and Breakthrough
On February 15, 2004, Vermaelen made his professional debut for Ajax against Volendam. However, his first season was cut short, leading to a loan to Waalwijk for the 2004-2005 season. Despite limited appearances, he scored two goals.
Upon returning to Ajax, Vermaelen quickly established himself as a key player, helping the team secure the KNVB Cup in 2006. His impressive performances earned him a call-up to the Belgian national team.
