Tomislav Nikolić: A Charismatic Serbian Politician
Early Life and EducationTomislav Nikolić was born on February 15, 1952, in the Serbian city of Kragujevac. He completed his education in construction engineering and briefly attended law school before dropping out in 1971.
Political Career
Nikolić's political journey began in the early 1990s during the disintegration of Yugoslavia. He joined the Serbian Radical Party (SRS), founded by Vojislav Šešelj, and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the party's first vice-chairman in 1991.
In 1992, Nikolić was elected to the Serbian Parliament, the first of several parliamentary mandates. He held various government positions, including Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia in 1998 and Deputy Prime Minister of Yugoslavia in 1999.
Presidential Candidacy and Election
In 2000, Nikolić ran for President of Yugoslavia. He placed third, trailing Vojislav Koštunica and Slobodan Milošević. However, in 2003, he won the Serbian presidential election, but it was invalidated due to low voter turnout.
Leadership of the Serbian Radical Party
Following Šešelj's arrest and imprisonment by the Hague Tribunal in 2003, Nikolić became the de facto leader of the SRS. He led the party to victory in the 2003 parliamentary elections but failed to form a coalition government.
Parliamentary Speaker and Presidential Bids
In 2007, Nikolić was elected Speaker of the Serbian Parliament, becoming the first elected speaker of the independent nation. He resigned from this position in May 2007 after a parliamentary crisis.
Nikolić ran for President again in 2008 but lost to Boris Tadić. He remained an influential figure in Serbian politics, leading the SRS to significant gains in the 2008 parliamentary elections.
Personal Life and Legacy
Nikolić is married to Drajica and has two sons. He is known for his knowledge of Russian literature and his passion for music. He holds the title of Chetnik Vojvoda, a traditional Serbian military rank.
