Early Life and Education
John Michael "Mick" Mulvaneywas born on July 21, 1967, in Alexandria, Virginia. He grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, before moving to Indian Land, South Carolina.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree with honors in international economics, trade, and finance from Georgetown University
- Doctorate of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from the University of North Carolina School of Law, where he specialized in antitrust law (1992)
Legal and Business Career
After graduating from law school, Mulvaney practiced law at the firm James, McElroy & Diehl from 1992 to 1997. Subsequently, he joined his family's home building and real estate development business.
Business Ventures:
- Minority shareholder and operating owner of the restaurant chain Salsarita's Fresh Cantina
- Attended Harvard Business School's Owner/President Management program
Political Career
South Carolina House of Representatives (2006-2008)- Elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 2006
- Named "Rookie Legislator of the Year 2006" by the Palmetto Family Council for his work on a bill requiring women seeking abortions in South Carolina to undergo an ultrasound beforehand
South Carolina Senate (2008-2010)
- Elected to the South Carolina Senate in 2008, defeating incumbent Democrat
- Served on the Judiciary, Commerce, Labor, Commerce, and Banking and Insurance committees
- Named "Legislator of the Year 2010" for his support of South Carolina's emergency medical services

Personal Life
Mulvaney is the son of Michael Mulvaney, Sr. and Kathy Mulvaney. He married Pamela West in 1998, and they have three children: Finn, James, and Caroline.
