Tommy Hilfiger: American Fashion Icon

Early Life and Education:

Born and raised in New York City, Tommy Hilfiger was the second of nine children. Despite his parents' wishes for him to become an engineer, Hilfiger pursued a different path. He dropped out of college and ventured into retail, where he gained firsthand experience in the business by buying and reselling jeans.

Founding Tommy Hilfiger Corporation:

In 1984, Hilfiger established the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation. In 1992, the company gained widespread recognition with the launch of its upscale men's collection, earning Hilfiger the prestigious Men's Designer of the Year Award two years later.

Expansion and Success:

By 2004, Tommy Hilfiger had become a global powerhouse with over 5,500 employees and revenue exceeding $1.8 billion. However, declining sales led Hilfiger to sell the company in 2006 for $1.6 billion.

Diversification and Philanthropy:

Despite the sale, the Tommy Hilfiger brand remains popular, particularly its signature denim line. Hilfiger has also become a notable philanthropist, supporting various sports initiatives. He was an active sponsor of several Formula 1 teams in the early-to-mid 1990s and later became a major backer of the Ferrari racing team in the early 2000s.
