Early Career and Success

Steven Kidd began his hockey journey in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Spokane Chiefs. In 1991, he led the team to a Memorial Cup victory. His exceptional performance earned him the Del Wilson Trophy as the WHL's Goaltender of the Year in 1989-90.

International Success

Kidd's talent extended beyond the WHL. He represented Canada at three World Junior Championships, winning gold twice. He also served as a backup goalie for the national team at the 1992 Winter Olympics, where he made one appearance against Norway.

NHL Journey

The Calgary Flames selected Kidd 11th overall in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut on March 3, 1992, in a loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. It took two years for Kidd to establish himself as a starting goaltender, facing competition from Mike Vernon.

Career Transitions

In 1997, Kidd was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Andrew Cassels and Jean-Sebastien Giguere. After two seasons, he was traded to the Atlanta Thrashers in 1999 before being picked up by the Florida Panthers. Despite strong performances in Florida, Kidd was unable to secure a starting role due to the presence of Roberto Luongo.

Final Years and Retirement

In 2002, Kidd joined the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent. His two years there were marked by below-average statistics. His final NHL appearance came in 2004 in a losing effort against the Philadelphia Flyers. During the 2004-05 lockout, he played for HC Örebro 90 in Sweden. In 2005, he briefly joined the Hannover Scorpions in Germany. Kidd retired from hockey in 2006.
