Early Life and Education
Cai Chang was born into an official's family in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province. In 1904, she traveled to Japan to pursue her education, where she encountered Tao Chengzhang, a leading member of the anti-Manchu revolutionary organization Guofu Hui.
Joining the Revolution
Inspired by Tao Chengzhang, Cai Chang returned to China in 1905 and joined Guofu Hui. Shortly after Sun Yat-sen established the revolutionary party Tongmenghui, Cai Chang joined its ranks in 1905.
Establishing "Zhongguo Nü Bao"
In 1906, Cai Chang returned to China and took charge of a school in Shaoxing. While gaining recognition as a poet, her primary focus remained on revolutionary work. She founded the newspaper "Zhongguo Nü Bao" ("Chinese Women's News") in Shanghai, actively preparing for an anti-Manchu uprising in Zhejiang Province.
Leadership and Execution
Cai Chang played a pivotal role in organizing the uprising. However, the authorities uncovered the plot, leading to her arrest. On September 15, 1907, Cai Chang was executed, becoming the first female revolutionary in China to die for the cause of revolution.
