Biography of Tuomas Holopainen

Tuomas Holopainen is a Finnish keyboardist, composer, and lyricist, best known as a member of the symphonic metal band Nightwish. Born in Kitee, Finland, Tuomas developed a passion for music at a young age and began learning to play the piano at the age of seven. He later studied clarinet, saxophone, and music theory.

Tuomas joined his first band, Dismal Silence, in 1993 and went on to play keyboards for several other bands, including Darkwoods My Betrothed and Nattvindens Gråt. In 1996, he decided to form his own band and created Nightwish, drawing inspiration from groups such as Third and the Mortal and Theatre of Tragedy. The band released their debut album, "Angels Fall First," in 1996, followed by "Oceanborn" in 1998 and "Wishmaster" in 2000.

In 1999, Tuomas and members of other Finnish metal bands formed the group For My Pain..., but their activity was put on hold due to the members' commitments to their respective bands. Nightwish continued to release albums, including "Century Child" in 2002 and "Once" in 2004, which featured a collaboration with bassist and vocalist Marco Hietala.

Tuomas faced a dark period in his life in 2006, marked by anxiety and depression, which inspired the band's darkest album, "Dark Passion Play." In 2007, he fulfilled one of his grandest desires by composing the soundtrack for the Finnish film "Lieksa!" and also collaborated with other music projects.

Throughout his career, Tuomas has been a source of inspiration for many musicians, including Simone Simons of Epica, Nicole Bogner of Visions of Atlantis, and Tony Kakko of Sonata Arctica. He has also contributed vocals to several Nightwish songs and has cited his love for Disney, Tolkien, and Dragonlance as influences.

In addition to his work with Nightwish, Tuomas has also produced for the Finnish pop-rock group Indica. He released Nightwish's seventh album, "Imaginaerum," in 2011.

Outside of music, Tuomas is known for his love of films and incorporates elements from them into his stage performances. He cites Hans Zimmer, Vangelis, Danny Elfman, and Metallica among his favorite artists. His favorite books include "The Lord of the Rings," "The Dark Tower" series, and "The Count of Monte Cristo."
