Biography of Derrick Green
Derrick Leon Green was born on January 20, 1971, in Cleveland. He is an American musician, photographer, and the vocalist of the band Sepultura.
Early Life and Family
Green's father grew up in a poor family in Atlanta, where he had 10 siblings besides Derrick. From a young age, Green had to work on a farm. His mother, on the other hand, grew up in Cleveland and excelled academically, striving for a decent education. She pursued a singing career, traveling and performing until she met Derrick's future father.
Derrick Green was the youngest son in the family, with his brother being 5 years older and his sister being 10 years older than him. The Green family was quite religious, and alcohol and smoking were not tolerated. Working hard, his parents tried to provide their children with good education, and when Derrick turned 7, the family moved to a more prestigious neighborhood to find a decent school. However, Green did not enjoy attending school and planned to become an artist after graduation. However, at the age of 15, he decided to dedicate his life to music and did not pursue a university education, instead devoting his free time to it.
Music Career
After finishing school, Green worked as a security guard at a nightclub. During this time, he developed a habit of smoking marijuana and consuming hallucinogenic mushrooms. However, he always stayed away from heroin and cocaine. With his move to New York, Green quit drugs, smoking, and alcohol. Additionally, he became a vegetarian.
Green started his musical journey from an early age, thanks to his mother who was a music teacher. He learned to play the piano, although he hated it. Even during his school days, Derrick played in the band Outface, which led him to miss his high school graduation ceremony as his band had a concert on the same day as the ceremony, performing with Fugazi.
Sepultura discovered Green through Roadrunner Records, thanks to the recordings of the band Outface, where Derrick used to sing. According to Green, they quickly found a common ground, and after he took over the microphone, they began recording their album.
On May 28, 2010, the debut album of Green's side project from São Paulo, Musica Diablo, is scheduled to be released.
Personal Life and Beliefs
Religion has had a significant influence on Green's life. Although his parents were Christians, Derrick considers himself a follower of Hinduism and believes in the reincarnation of the soul. He has been a vegetarian for over 20 years.
