Early Life and Education

Born in Estonia, Heino Eller was an acclaimed composer and choral conductor. He graduated from the Tallinn Conservatory in 1926, earning degrees in composition under Artur Kapp and violin. Eller further honed his compositional skills under the guidance of Mart Saar.

Choral Conducting Career

Despite his talents as a composer, Eller achieved greater recognition as a choral conductor. He led various ensembles, including the Tallinn University Choir from 1924 to 1938. Eller's renowned conducting prowess earned him the privilege of directing the Estonian Singing Festivals in 1933, 1938, 1947, 1960, 1969, and 1990.

Teaching and Repression

Eller's teaching career spanned two periods at the Tallinn Conservatory. From 1940 to 1950, he taught, initially leading the choral department until 1947. In 1950, Eller and two other professors, Riho Päts and Alfred Karindi, faced political repression and were sent to a labor camp.

Rehabilitation and Legacy

After his release in 1956, Eller's reputation was rehabilitated in 1968. He resumed teaching at the Tallinn Conservatory from 1956 to 1962. Eller's legacy as a composer and choral conductor continues to inspire Estonian musicians.
