Biography of Tyler Wright
Tyler Wright was born in 1973 in Kamsack, SK, CAN, a province in Canada. He was selected 12th overall in the 1991 NHL Draft by the Edmonton Oilers. In the 1989-90 season, Wright scored 32 points as a rookie for the Swift Current Broncos. He then improved his personal performance in the 1990-91 season, scoring 41 goals and making 92 assists in 66 games. The following season, 1991-92, he recorded 36 goals and 82 assists in 63 games.
In the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons, Tyler played for the Edmonton Oilers, but he spent most of his time with the AHL team, Cape Breton Oilers. On June 2, 1996, Wright was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins and played 45 games with them during the 1996-97 season, scoring 2 goals and making 2 assists. The following season, 1997-98, he played all 82 games for the Penguins, helping the team win the Northeast Division title and making his playoff debut.
In the 1998-99 season, Wright played 61 games for the Penguins, and the next year, he played 50 games, scoring 12 goals and making 22 assists. He scored his first playoff goal on April 21, 1999, in a game against the Washington Capitals, and earned 4 points in 11 playoff games that year.
On June 23, 2000, Tyler Wright was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2000 NHL Expansion Draft. In his first season with the Blue Jackets, he scored 16 goals and made 32 assists, becoming a leader for the team. During the NHL lockout, Wright played for the Swiss team EHC Biel in the second division.
After four seasons with the Blue Jackets, Wright was traded to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on November 15, 2005, while Sergei Fedorov went to the Blue Jackets. In international competition, Wright represented Canada in the 1992 and 1993 World Junior Championships, winning the gold medal in 1993 as an alternate captain.
In 2002, Tyler Wright became a member of Canada's World Championship team. After retiring as a player, he joined the Columbus Blue Jackets as a coach in July 2007. His responsibilities include working with young prospects throughout the organization and developing prospects in junior leagues and college.
