Early Life and Career
Udo Lattek, a German football coach, rose to prominence for his exceptional successes. Despite his initial aspirations to become a teacher, he pursued a career in football in 1965 as an assistant to Helmut Schön, traveling to the 1966 World Cup in England.
Coaching Career
Bayern MunichOn March 14, 1970, Lattek took over as manager of Bayern Munich. His debut match resulted in a resounding 6-0 victory over Alemannia. In his first season, the team won six out of eight matches, securing second place. They continued to perform well in the following season, earning another second place finish.
However, the 1972-73 season marked the beginning of a dominant era for Bayern Munich under Lattek's leadership. They won three consecutive Bundesliga championships and the European Cup, defeating Atletico Madrid in the final.
Borussia Mönchengladbach
Following his departure from Bayern, Lattek joined Borussia Mönchengladbach for the 1975/76 season. Once again, he experienced early success, leading the team to two consecutive Bundesliga titles and reaching the final of the 1976/77 European Cup. However, their performance declined in subsequent seasons, with the team finishing 10th in the 1978/79 season. Lattek managed to end his tenure with a victory, winning the UEFA Cup against Red Star Belgrade.
Borussia Dortmund
Lattek's stint as manager of Borussia Dortmund was less successful. The team finished sixth and seventh respectively, failing to meet expectations. Lattek resigned on May 10.
FC Barcelona
Lattek joined Barcelona for the 1981/82 season. The team began the La Liga campaign strongly but faltered in the final four matches, allowing Real Sociedad to claim the championship. However, Lattek guided Barcelona to victory in the Cup Winners' Cup, defeating Standard Liège 2-1 in the final.
Lattek's tenure at Barcelona was marked by the signing of Diego Maradona. However, the Argentine star proved to be a source of trouble for the coach. Lattek resigned after a defeat to Racing Santander on March 3, 1983.
Return to Bayern Munich
Lattek made a triumphant return to Bayern Munich for the 1983/84 season. The team won three consecutive Bundesliga titles, solidifying his status as a legendary coach. However, their dream of winning the European Cup again was shattered in the 1987 final, where they lost to Porto. Lattek departed the club at the end of the season.
Later Years
Following his departure from Bayern, Lattek had unsuccessful stints at Köln and Schalke 04. He then retired from coaching and became a football commentator for the television channel DSF.
In 1998, Lattek made a brief return to Borussia Dortmund with Matthias Sammer. Their combined efforts saved the team from relegation, finishing the season in 11th place. Lattek retired from coaching after that season, with The Times ranking him 40th among the best managers in the world.
