Biography of Ulrich Hans Walter
Ulrich Hans Walter, a German physicist and engineer, is a former astronaut of the German Aerospace Center. Currently, he holds the position of a professor at the Technical University Munich and is the head of the Department of Aerospace Technologies in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. He has authored several books and more than 60 journal publications on space and space travel. Additionally, he served as the host of the popular science show "MaxQ – Lust auf Wissen" on Bavarian television from 1998 to 2003.

Personal Life and Achievements
Ulrich Walter resides in Munich with his wife and two daughters. He is the president of the Hermann Oberth Space Travel Museum in Feucht, a Bavarian town dedicated to space technologies. He is also a member of the scientific advisory council of the Deutsches Museum in Munich and the scientific-technical center "x-world" in Freiburg. Ulrich Walter has been recognized for his contributions and achievements, receiving the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Werner von Braun Medal.

Early Life and Education
Ulrich Walter was born on February 9, 1954, in Iserlohn, a major city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. After completing school, he voluntarily joined the Bundeswehr, the German armed forces, where he served for two years. During his last year of service, he became an instructor at the air defense school in Rendsburg, Schleswig-Holstein, and retired with the rank of lieutenant in the reserve.
In 1974, Walter enrolled as a student at the University of Cologne, studying physics. He earned his degree in experimental physics in 1980, specializing in solid-state physics. Five years later, he defended his doctoral dissertation while remaining a research associate at the Physics Institute of the University of Cologne. He received a grant for further training in the United States, where he spent two years at the Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago, Illinois, and the University of California at Berkeley.
Astronaut Career
In 1987, Ulrich Walter joined the German astronaut team. From 1988 to 1990, he completed his basic training at the German Aerospace Center and then became a member of the main crew for the second German flight of the Spacelab D-2 program. In 1993, Walter embarked on a space mission aboard the space shuttle "Columbia" as a payload specialist, spending 9 days, 23 hours, and 40 minutes in space.
After his space flight, Walter worked for four more years at the aerospace center, managing a project on compiling a database of space imagery. When the German astronaut team joined the European Space Agency, he resigned and began working at the German division of IBM. Since 2003, he has been teaching at the Technical University Munich.
