Early Life and Education
Ulrich Ludwig Gans zu Putlitz, born on January 5, 1821, in Retzin, Brandenburg, Prussia, was a renowned German historian, philologist, and archaeologist.
Career
Research and PublicationsPutlitz began his academic career in Berlin, where he studied philology. He specialized in classical philology and ancient history. In 1856, he was appointed director of the Archaeological Institute in Athens. During his tenure there, he made significant contributions to the study of ancient Greece.
Epigraphy
Putlitz was particularly known for his work in epigraphy, the study of inscriptions. In 1870, he published "Urkunden und Untersuchungen zur Geschichte des delisch-attischen Bundes" (Documents and Studies on the History of the Delian Attic Confederacy), an influential publication on the Attic dialect.
Corpus Inscriptionum Atticarum
Another major project undertaken by Putlitz was the second volume of the "Corpus Inscriptionum Atticarum" (Corpus of Attic Inscriptions). Published between 1877 and 1888, this work comprehensively documented ancient Attic inscriptions.
Professorship
In 1888, Putlitz was appointed professor of ancient history at the University of Berlin. He taught there until his retirement in 1890.
