Early Life and Education
Unnur Brá Magnúsdóttir was born in Iceland in 1970. She graduated from Menntaskólinn á Laugarvatni in 1994 and from the Faculty of Law at the University of Iceland in 2000.
Career History
Prior to entering politics, Magnúsdóttir held various legal and administrative positions. She served as a deputy district commissioner in Ísafjörður (2000-2002) and Selfoss (2002-2004), and as an assistant to the District Court of Suðurnes (2002-2004). From 2004 to 2006, she worked as a lawyer at the National Land Registry.
Political Career
Magnúsdóttir began her political career as Mayor of Rangárþing eystri from 2006 to 2009. She was elected as a member of the Althing (Parliament) in 2009 as a representative of the Independence Party for the Southern Constituency.
In 2017, Magnúsdóttir was elected Speaker of the Althing, serving until the parliamentary elections later that year. After leaving Parliament, she worked in the Prime Minister's Office as a government aide, government representative on climate issues, and project manager for the constitutional review.
Notable Event
In 2016, Magnúsdóttir gained international attention when she brought her one-month-old baby to the podium of the Althing and breastfed her during a debate on an immigration referendum. This act was widely praised as a powerful symbol of the importance of work-life balance for women in politics.
