Biography of Urs Graf
Urs Graf was a Swiss artist and one of the pioneers of independent drawing. He was born in Zoloturne around 1485, into a family of goldsmiths. Graf learned the craftsmanship of jewelry-making from his father. He worked in Basel, Strasbourg, Zurich, and then returned to Basel, where he served at the mint from 1518 to 1523. As a mercenary landsknecht, he also participated in military campaigns in Italy and Burgundy.
Master of Graphics
Though Graf also created stained glass and paintings, he is primarily remembered as a master of graphics. His pen compositions, whether purely linear on white sheets or with light tonal and light strokes on dark and colored paper, were considered independent drawings rather than mere sketches for paintings. Graf's independence did not adhere to traditional iconography, portraits, and landscapes like many other drawing pioneers. Instead, he showcased a daring freedom that ignored conventional canons.
Artistic Style
Graf's artistic peak occurred in the mid-1510s, with his nature motifs gradually giving way to fantasies. The master is best known for his depictions of soldier life, which were characterized by sharp, sometimes cruel grotesque elements that mercilessly exposed the antiheroic, funny, or terrifying aspects of war. Some notable works in this vein include "Gathering of Soldiers" (1515), "Landsknecht with Maiden" (1516), "Field of Battle" (1521), "Swiss Mercenary with Recruiters and Death" (1521), and "Bride of the Hanged Man" (1525), all housed in the Public Art Collection in Basel.
Religious and Engraving Works
Graf's drawings also displayed elements of dark grotesque in his religious scenes, such as "Flagellation of Christ" (1520). Additionally, he worked in various engraving techniques throughout his career.
Legacy and Death
Urs Graf likely died in Basel in either 1527 or 1528. His work as a pioneering graphic artist left a lasting impact on the art world, showcasing his boldness and unconventional approach to depicting various subjects.
