Early Life and Education
Born in 1943 in Rovnypol, Ukraine, the Ukrainian politician was raised in the heart of the Donbas region.
Work and Technical Career
After graduating high school, he began working as a laborer in the "Donetsk" collective farm in 1960. Pursuing higher education, he attended the Melitopol Institute of Agricultural Mechanization from 1961 to 1966, earning a degree in mechanics.
Upon completing his studies, he returned to the "Donetsk" collective farm as a mechanic section manager in 1966. Two years later, he became the chief engineer of the Volnovakha district poultry farm. His technical prowess led him to the position of head of the Volnovakha district agricultural equipment association "Selkhoztekhnika" in 1971.
Entry into Politics
His political journey began in 1974 when he was elected as the second secretary of the Volnovakha district committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine (CPU). In 1976, he became a student at the Higher Party School under the Central Committee of the CPU, graduating in 1978.
He progressed rapidly through the party ranks, serving as the first secretary of the Artemivsk district committee of the CPU from 1978 onwards. In 1988, he assumed the role of head of the agricultural department of the Donetsk regional committee of the CPU.
Rise in the Donetsk Region
From 1989 to 1991, he rose to the position of secretary of the Donetsk regional committee of the CPU, a position of significant influence in the region. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, he transitioned to the private sector, becoming deputy general director of the Donetsk regional horticulture management from 1991 to 1992.
In 1992, he was elected chairman of the Donetsk regional council of people's deputies, serving until 1994. He then represented Ukraine as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Turkmenistan from 1995 to 2004.
Service in Government
Upon his return from Turkmenistan, he was appointed as the first deputy chairman of the board of directors of the National Joint-Stock Company "Naftogaz of Ukraine" in 2004.
In 2005, he reached the pinnacle of his political career when he became the chairman of the Donetsk regional state administration (or governor) from February 4 until April 15, 2006.
Following his tenure as governor, he held several high-ranking positions in the Ukrainian energy sector, including first deputy minister of fuel and energy from 2006 to 2008 and deputy chairman of the board of directors of Naftogaz of Ukraine from 2008 onwards.
