Early Life and Education

Vagn Armaysovich Akovbyan was born on May 29, 1941, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. In 1964, he graduated from the Tashkent State Medical Institute with a degree in medicine.

Academic Career

After graduating, Akovbyan became a postgraduate and then an assistant professor in the Department of Pathological Physiology. In 1968, he defended his doctoral dissertation.

Practical Work

In 1975, Akovbyan transitioned to practical work as a physician at the Clinic of the Uzbek Research Institute of Dermatology and Venereology. From 1977 to 1986, he worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Dermatology and Venereology at the 1st Tashkent Medical Institute.

Leadership Roles

In 1986, Akovbyan was appointed Director of the Uzbek Research Institute of Dermatology and Venereology, where he served until 1992. In 1988, he earned his doctorate in medicine with a dissertation on "Photochemotherapy of Psoriasis under Ecological Insolation." In 1990, he was promoted to professorship.

Contributions to STI Research

Akovbyan is a renowned specialist in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and public health. He was involved in developing new treatments for syphilis, gonorrhea, and other STIs. Additionally, he contributed to national programs in Uzbekistan and Russia to prevent the spread of STIs.

Application of Evidence-Based Medicine

Akovbyan pioneered the use of evidence-based medicine principles in the field of STIs. He evaluated the effectiveness of medications and diagnostic methods and advocated for the use of analytical epidemiology to identify risk groups.

Publications and Editorial Roles

Akovbyan has authored over 180 publications, including over 20 in international journals. He has co-authored sections in medical handbooks and textbooks and is a member of the editorial board for several medical journals.

Mentorship and Guidance

Akovbyan has supervised and consulted on 12 doctoral and 2 doctoral dissertations, providing guidance to aspiring researchers in the field.
