Early Life and Education

Born in 1931, Lennart Meri was a political figure and diplomat who played a significant role in Estonian history. He joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) in 1952 and graduated from the University of Tartu in 1955.

Political Career in the Estonian SSR

Meri began his political career in 1949, holding various positions in the Komsomol youth organization. He rose through the ranks of the Estonian Communist Party (ECP), serving as First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Young Communist League of Estonia. In 1961, he joined the party's leadership as First Secretary of the Tallinn City Committee and later as Secretary of the ECP Central Committee.

Diplomatic Service

From 1980 to 1988, Meri served as a diplomat, representing the Soviet Union as ambassador to Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, and Nicaragua, holding the rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.

First Secretary of the ECP

In June 1988, Meri became First Secretary of the ECP. During this tumultuous period, he witnessed the party's split in March 1990 and became Chairman of the independent Estonian Communist Party.

Advocate for Estonian Independence

Meri played a pivotal role in the movement for Estonian sovereignty and independence. He supported the restoration of Estonian independence, which was achieved in 1991.

Awards and Recognition

Meri received numerous awards, including the Order of Lenin, three Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of Friendship of Peoples, and various medals.
