Maria Elena Boschi: A Rising Star in Italian Politics
Early Life and EducationMaria Elena Boschi was born in Montevarchi, Italy on January 24, 1981. She is the daughter of Pier Luigi Boschi, an entrepreneur, and Stefania Agresti, who later became deputy mayor of Laternina. Boschi grew up in Laternina and attended the Liceo Petrarca in Arezzo. She went on to study corporate law at the University of Florence, where she earned a master's degree.
Political Career
Boschi entered the political arena in 2009 when she supported Michele Ventura, an opponent of Matteo Renzi, in the mayoral election in Florence. Despite Renzi's victory, he recognized Boschi's talent as a jurist and appointed her as legal advisor. She played a key role in overseeing the privatization of ATAF, Florence's public transportation company.
In 2013, Boschi was elected to the Chamber of Deputies as a member of the Democratic Party. She served on the Constitutional Affairs Committee and became known as the "Jaguar" (Giaguara) for her active support of Renzi and her stylish "leopard" shoes.
Minister of Constitutional Reforms and Relations with Parliament
In 2014, Boschi was appointed Minister of Constitutional Reforms and Relations with Parliament in Renzi's government. She played a central role in drafting and promoting the so-called "Boschi Law," which proposed reforms to the electoral system and the Senate.
The Boschi Law proved to be highly controversial, sparking opposition from both within the Democratic Party and other political groups. Despite passing through both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, it was ultimately rejected in a referendum in 2016, leading to Renzi's resignation.
Support for Equal Rights and LGBT Issues
Boschi has been a vocal advocate for equal rights and LGBT issues. She helped advance legislation to legalize civil partnerships for same-sex couples in Italy. She has also expressed support for the eventual recognition of gay marriage.
Banca Etruria Scandal
In 2015, Boschi became embroiled in the Banca Etruria scandal, which involved the collapse of a Tuscan bank where her father served as vice president. She faced allegations of conflict of interest, but defended herself by stating that she had no role in the government's decision to intervene in the bank.
Secretary of the Council of Ministers
After Renzi's resignation, Boschi was appointed Secretary of the Council of Ministers in the government of Paolo Gentiloni in 2016. In this role, she oversaw the functioning of the government's cabinet and coordinated its legislative agenda.
Return to Parliament and Italia Viva
Following the 2018 parliamentary elections, Boschi was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies. In 2019, she joined the newly formed Italia Viva party, founded by Renzi. She currently serves as the group leader for Italia Viva in the Chamber of Deputies.
Personal Life and Characteristics
Boschi identifies as a Catholic and is known for her strong work ethic. She has been described as both attractive and intelligent, often drawing media attention for her appearance rather than her political accomplishments. However, those who know her emphasize her knowledge and commitment to public service.
