Val Bezic was a Canadian figure skater of Croatian descent who achieved notable success in the world of pair skating with his sister, Sandra Bezic.
Origins and Family Background
Born in Canada, Val's mother, Angeline Mateljan, was born in northern Ontario in 1927 to Croatian immigrants. His father, Dusan Bezic, was a refugee from Croatia who arrived in Canada at the age of 25. Both of Val's parents had family roots in the same village on the Croatian island of Šolta.
Early Skating Career
In 1965, Val embarked on his skating journey, partnering with his sister, Sandra Bezic. Their initial outing at the Canadian Junior Figure Skating Championships in 1966 did not yield impressive results, placing second to last. However, in 1967, they emerged victorious in the same competition.
Canadian Success and International Recognition
Throughout their partnership, Val and Sandra Bezic achieved notable milestones on the national stage. They captured the Canadian pair skating title five consecutive times from 1970 to 1974.
Their international presence was equally impressive. In 1972, they participated in the Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan, finishing in 9th place. Two years later, they achieved their highest international ranking, placing 5th at the 1974 World Championships.
