Fighter Pilot: The Early Years
Valentin Ivanovich Khomyakov was born into a peasant family in the village of Sloboda, Rylsky District, Kursk Oblast, Russia, on January 27, 1915. From a young age, he exhibited an interest in aviation, inspired by the stories of his father, who had served as a pilot during World War I.

In 1934, Khomyakov enrolled in the Lugansk Military Aviation School for Pilots, graduating with honors in September 1936. He was assigned to the 16th Fighter Regiment, located in Kharkov, Ukraine. Two months later, the Spanish Civil War broke out, and Khomyakov eagerly volunteered for combat duty.
Spanish Civil War
On January 12, 1937, Khomyakov arrived in Spain with a group of Soviet volunteers. He joined the Republican Air Force and flew with the 61st Fighter Regiment, commanded by the legendary Yakov Smuškevich. Flying an I-15 biplane, Khomyakov engaged in over 30 air battles, shooting down six enemy aircraft. For his bravery and skill, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner.
World War II
After returning from Spain, Khomyakov continued his military service. When Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941, he joined the 401st Special Designation Fighter Regiment, flying an MiG-3. He soon became commander of the 1st Squadron.
Throughout the war, Khomyakov distinguished himself as an exceptional fighter pilot. He flew over 200 combat missions and shot down nine enemy aircraft. For his bravery and leadership, he was awarded numerous decorations, including two Orders of the Red Banner and the Order of the Patriotic War.
Post-War Career
After the war, Khomyakov retired from combat duty and became a test pilot for the Soviet Air Force. He flew over 120 different types of aircraft, including jet fighters and bombers. During his career, he experienced several life-threatening incidents, including a near-fatal crash in a MiG-15 and an explosive decompression in a La-168.
In addition to his test pilot work, Khomyakov also mentored and trained a group of Spanish pilots, who fought alongside the Soviet Air Force during World War II. He was a respected figure in the aviation community and shared his knowledge and expertise with future generations of pilots.
Valentin Ivanovich Khomyakov passed away in Moscow on January 28, 1992, at the age of 77. He left behind a legacy of valor and service to his country. He was a skilled fighter pilot, a dedicated test pilot, and a respected mentor and teacher. His memory lives on in the annals of aviation history.
