Biography of Valentin Velichko

Valentin Velichko was a Soviet and Belarusian party and state official, as well as a diplomat. He was born on June 15, 1944, in Sidorovtsy, which is now part of the Volozhin district of the Minsk region.

Early Life and Career

In 1962, Velichko started working as a refrigeration system operator at the Brest Dairy and later at the Gomel Meat Combine. In 1972, he graduated from the Leningrad Technological Institute as a mechanical engineer. At the same time, he became involved in Komsomol (Communist Youth League) activities in Gomel, where he served as the first secretary of the Novobelitsky district committee. In 1979, he became the second secretary of the Gomel City Committee of the Komsomol and later held the positions of the second and first secretaries of the Gomel Regional Committee of the Komsomol.

In 1980, Velichko completed his postgraduate studies at the Academy of Social Sciences under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, earning a candidate of economic sciences degree in 1982. From 1982 to 1983, he served as the secretary of the Gomel Regional Council of Trade Unions.

Party and State Positions

Starting from 1983, Velichko held various party and state positions in Gomel. He served as the chairman of the Soviet district executive committee and later became the first secretary of the Soviet district committee of the party. In 1989, he became the deputy chairman of the Gomel Regional Executive Committee, and from 1990 to 1993, he was the chairman of the Trade Union Association of the Gomel region. Velichko also lectured at the Gomel University during this time.

Diplomatic Career

From April 15, 1993, Velichko served as the ambassador of Belarus to Latvia, and from 1994, he held the position of ambassador to Finland as well. On September 10, 1997, he became the Minister for CIS Affairs, and from 1999 to 2001, he served as the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus.

From June 15, 2001, to June 13, 2016, Velichko held the position of ambassador of Belarus to Ukraine.

Family

Velichko is married and has two sons.
