Early Life and Education

French explorer and diplomat, graduated from the École Polytechnique and served in the French navy.

Arrival in Cambodia

In 1863, he arrived in Cambodia to prepare King Norodom for the establishment of a French protectorate and to oversee its implementation. In 1864, the agreement was signed.

Mekong Exploration Commission

In 1866, he was appointed head of the Commission for the Exploration of the Mekong River, aiming to "define the boundaries of ancient Cambodia according to traditional accounts and the location of major ruins."

Expedition and Death

He passed away in 1868 in Yunnan, China, before completing the expedition. His assistant, Francis Garnier, successfully completed the mission and published the results in "Exploration Journey" in 1873.
