Valerie Beg - Biography
Valerie Beg (born September 26, 1985 in Saint-Pierre) was crowned Miss France 2008. She decided to participate in the competition while residing in Dunkirk, in Northern France. She represented Reunion Island, a French overseas department located in the Indian Ocean. Valerie was the second Miss France from Reunion Island, with the first being Monique Uldaric in 1976.
Controversy and Disqualification
Just two weeks after being crowned Miss France, photos of Valerie Beg were published in the French magazine "Entrevue." As a result, Genevieve de Fontenay, the president of the Miss France competition, stripped Valerie Beg of her Miss France title, and she was subsequently disqualified.
Genevieve de Fontenay explained to journalists that the decision was based on the position of the company Endemol, which owned the rights to the Miss France competition and disagreed with her decision. She emphasized that Valerie's disqualification was not related to her birth outside of France. De Fontenay rejected allegations of racism and stated that Valerie was welcome to stay on her native Reunion Island.
On December 28, 2007, Genevieve de Fontenay announced that Valerie Beg would retain her title as Miss France 2008, but would not be allowed to participate in international pageants.
