Early Life and Career
Valery Pavlovich Chistyakov was born on October 4, 1897, in Yegoryevsk, Moscow Oblast. In October 1918, he enlisted in the Red Army and served in the Russian Civil War. After the war, he held various command positions within the Red Army. In 1940, he became acting commander of the 44th Rifle Division's 122nd Artillery Regiment.
World War II
With the outbreak of World War II in July 1941, Chistyakov served as artillery chief for the 250th Rifle Division. He participated in the Battle of Smolensk, battles near Rzhev, Sychevka, and Torzhok, and the Moscow counteroffensive. From May 1942, he was artillery chief and deputy commander of the 25th Guards Rifle Division on the Voronezh Front. He was severely wounded during battles on the Don and evacuated to a hospital.
After recovering in October 1942, Chistyakov became deputy commander of the 6th Army's artillery. He constantly observed artillery fire on the front lines, passing on his experience to younger soldiers. In May 1944, he became artillery commander for the 37th Army.
The artillery units under Chistyakov's command excelled during the Dniester Offensive, achieving a decisive advantage over German forces. This enabled the infantry to break through the German defenses and advance to the Prut River and Chisinau, defeating German-Romanian units.
Post-War and Legacy
After the war, Chistyakov continued his service in the Soviet Army and later became a teacher. Upon retirement, he resided in Moscow. He passed away in 1972 and was buried in the Khimki Cemetery.
